Summary: Lindapter Hollo-Bolts were used to attach gigantic decorative ‘bee hive’ to the world’s tallest residential tower.
Melbourne’s prestigious Eureka Tower, dominates the Southbank at a height of 300m and features a spectacular façade that includes mounted giant bees created by sculptor Richard Stringer.
The contractor required a method of securing an oversized bee hive to the structural steelwork, overcoming the restricted space behind the façade. Lindapter’s Hollo-Bolt proved the perfect solution, allowing the installation to be carried out from one side only, whilst providing the strength to support the hive and sculptures.
The installation procedure was remarkably simple; cladding panels were removed to reveal the structure’s hollow section steelwork, the hive’s mounts were placed into position and Hollo-Bolts inserted into drilled holes and tightened to activate the cavity fixing’s expansion process. With the hive firmly secured to the building, the bees were then added, promptly completing the installation.
The Lindapter Hollo-Bolt is an expansion bolt method of securing to square, rectangular or circular hollow section steel, or to conventional steelwork where access is available from one side only. Awarded the Design Council's Millennium Products status for innovation in connecting to hollow section, the Hollo-Bolt also has third party endorsements from associations including the UK's Steel Construction Institute. The Lindapter Hollo-Bolt is the only blind fixing that carries the SCI approval for use in primary structural connections.
